Scuba Diving in
Trincomalee, Sri Lanka
Explore WWII shipwrecks, encounter blacktip reef sharks at Pigeon Island, and dive with blue whales off the coast of Trincomalee. Dive King is the closest dive center to Trincomalee town — your most convenient gateway to the best diving on Sri Lanka's east coast.
Why Trincomalee is Sri Lanka's Best Diving Destination
Warm water, world-class visibility, WWII history, and megafauna encounters — all in one destination.
WWII Wrecks
Trincomalee is home to the HMS Hermes — the world's first purpose-built aircraft carrier — sunk by Japanese bombers in 1942. The SS British Sergeant lies nearby at accessible intermediate depths. No other location in Sri Lanka offers this calibre of wreck diving.
Blue Whales & Dolphins
From April to July, Trincomalee sits on one of the world's most reliable blue whale migration routes. Sperm whales, Bryde's whales, and pods of spinner dolphins are also frequently encountered on the way out to dive sites — an experience that sets Trincomalee apart from every other dive destination on the island.
Pigeon Island Marine National Park
Pigeon Island is one of Sri Lanka's two marine national parks and home to some of the healthiest hard coral in the Indian Ocean. Depths of 3–15 metres and excellent visibility make it equally spectacular for snorkellers and divers of all levels.
East Coast Season Advantage
While Sri Lanka's west and south coast dive spots are at their best from November to April, Trincomalee's east coast location means the season runs from March to October — giving divers a full alternative when conditions close elsewhere. No monsoon clashes.

Best Time to Dive in Trincomalee
Trincomalee dives from March to October. Here's what to expect month by month.
Whale Season
Blue whales and sperm whales are regularly encountered from April to July (peak). Spinner dolphins are present throughout the season. These sightings happen on the surface during boat rides to dive sites — no extra trip needed.
Monsoon Closure
The northeast monsoon runs from mid-November to early March. Rough seas and reduced visibility mean dive centers are closed during this period. West and south coast sites (Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna) are the better option from November to April.
A 3 mm wetsuit is recommended year-round. Water temperatures remain comfortable at 27–30°C throughout the season with no thermocline issues at recreational depths.
What to Expect Diving with Dive King
A typical two-dive morning from our base in Trincomalee.
Meet at Dive King. Equipment fitting, site briefing, and safety review.
Short ride to the dive site — often whale and dolphin sightings en route.
45–60 minutes underwater. Average depth 12–20 m on most reef sites.
Relax on the boat, snacks, and share what you saw. Recharge for round two.
Second dive — often a different site. Longer bottom times at shallower depths.
Back at base. Log your dives, photos, and plan your next adventure.
Water temperatures of 27–30°C mean comfortable diving with a 3 mm wetsuit. Currents vary by site and tide — our team monitors conditions daily and selects sites to match the day's group skill levels. Trincomalee Marine Life: What You'll See
From resident reef species to seasonal ocean giants — Trincomalee's waters are extraordinarily diverse.
Reef & Wreck Species
Year-round residents across Trincomalee's reef and wreck sites. Most are encountered on every dive.
Blue & Sperm Whales
Trincomalee sits on one of the world's most active blue whale migration routes. From April to July, encounters with blue whales — the largest animals on Earth — are a regular part of a boat trip out to the dive sites. Sperm whales, Bryde's whales, and fin whales are also recorded seasonally.
Dolphins
Spinner dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and common dolphins are a frequent presence throughout the season. It's not unusual to see pods of 50–100 spinners leaping alongside the boat en route to a dive site.
Sea Turtle Conservation
Both hawksbill and green sea turtles are commonly encountered on reef dives in Trincomalee. Nesting occurs on nearby beaches, and active conservation efforts have resulted in measurable increases in successful nests in recent years. Divers are briefed to maintain respectful distances.
