Whale watching in Trincomalee runs from May through October, when blue whales feed in the deep-water channel close to Sri Lanka's east coast. Trincomalee is one of the few locations in Asia where blue whale sightings are near-daily during peak season — typically June and July. A typical trip with DiveKing lasts 3–4 hours, departing at 7am by boat from Trincomalee harbour. Blue whales, sperm whales, and spinner dolphins are the main species. Whale sharks and manta rays are occasional sightings. The trip is suitable for all ages and can be combined with an afternoon dive. Unlike the more commercialised whale watching on Sri Lanka's south coast at Mirissa, the east coast has smaller crowds and calmer conditions in the early morning.
The deep water channel that runs close to the Trincomalee coast is one of the most productive blue whale feeding areas in the world. Unlike Mirissa on the south coast — where trips can feel rushed and overcrowded — the whale watching here is less commercialised and, in season, genuinely reliable. On most mornings between June and September, you'll see at least one blue whale. On good days, three or four.
Spinner dolphins are practically guaranteed regardless of the season — they appear around the boat within minutes of leaving the jetty on most trips. Sperm whales are seen regularly from July onwards, often logging at the surface before a deep dive.

Season & Conditions
We run whale watching trips from May through October, aligned with the east coast diving season. June and July are the peak months — the sea is flat most mornings and the blue whales are feeding consistently close to shore.
Trips depart at 7am to make the most of the calm morning water. The boat heads south along the coast to the deep water channel, roughly 30–45 minutes from the jetty. Total trip time is 3–4 hours.
Outside this window, northeast monsoon weather makes the sea conditions unreliable and we don't run regular trips. If you're visiting between November and March and want to try your luck, contact us and we'll advise based on the current forecast.
What to Bring
- ✓Sunscreen (SPF 30+ minimum — the reflection off the water intensifies it)
- ✓Sunglasses and a hat or cap
- ✓Sea sickness tablets if you're prone (the channel can have a swell)
- ✓A camera or phone — blue whale encounters happen fast, be ready
- ✓Light snacks and water (we provide water on the boat)
