Scuba diving in Trincomalee takes place on Sri Lanka's east coast, where the April-to-October season brings flat seas, 20–30 metre visibility, and some of the most varied marine life in the Indian Ocean. The area centres on three main attractions: Pigeon Island Marine National Park — a protected reef with blacktip reef sharks and hawksbill turtles at 3–15 metres — the HMS Hermes aircraft carrier wreck at 44–53 metres, and a deep-water channel where blue whales feed from June through September. DiveKing runs daily dive trips, PADI courses from beginner level, and whale watching trips from our base on Dockyard Road, Trincomalee.
Trincomalee doesn't show up on most divers' radar — and that's precisely what makes it special. While the west coast crowds head to Hikkaduwa, the east coast opens up from April onwards to some of the most varied diving in the Indian Ocean. WWII wrecks sitting relatively shallow, a marine national park with healthy reef sharks, blue whale sightings almost weekly in season, and visibility that regularly exceeds 25 metres.
We've been diving these waters since DiveKing opened, and we still look forward to every morning boat trip. Whether you've never put a regulator in your mouth or you're chasing technical dives on the Hermes, Trincomalee delivers.
Why Dive in Trincomalee?
WWII Wrecks
Two significant WWII shipwrecks within a short boat ride — the HMS Hermes aircraft carrier and the SS British Sergeant. Both are heavily colonised with marine life.
Marine National Park
Pigeon Island is a protected marine park. No fishing, no anchor drops — the reef is in exceptional condition and the blacktip sharks are used to divers.
Blue Whales
Between June and September, blue whales feed in the waters off Trincomalee. Encounters are common enough that we plan dedicated whale watching trips throughout the season.
Dive Sites
A snapshot of the main sites — see our full dive sites guide for the complete list.
Pigeon Island
3–15 mAll levelsThe most visited site for a reason. Pigeon Island sits inside a marine national park, and the hard coral coverage here is among the healthiest on the entire east coast. You'll find blacktip reef sharks circling the shallower sections most mornings, and hawksbill turtles grazing the reef in the afternoons.
HMS Hermes
44–53 mAdvancedSunk on 9 April 1942 during a Japanese air raid, the HMS Hermes is a 182-metre aircraft carrier lying on her starboard side. The wreck is enormous — a single dive barely covers the flight deck. Lionfish, large grouper, and schools of batfish have made it home. Requires Advanced Open Water certification.
Swami Rock
5–25 mBeginner–IntermediateA rocky promontory that drops into a mix of coral gardens and sandy channels. Good for macro photography — nudibranchs, sea horses, and moray eels are regular sightings. The topography makes for an interesting drift dive when conditions allow.
SS British Sergeant
20–30 mIntermediateA WWII-era cargo vessel that went down in 1942. Nowhere near as large as the Hermes, but the structure is well-intact and completely overgrown with soft corals. Schools of fusiliers and a resident family of lionfish are the main attractions.
Best Season for Diving
The east coast diving season runs April through October. The northeast monsoon clears out around late March, visibility picks up quickly, and by May the water is flat and blue most days.
June to September is the sweet spot — this is when blue whales and sperm whales are most active in the channel. Sea conditions are generally calmer in the early morning, so most dive trips depart at 7–8am.
We do occasionally run dives outside this window when conditions allow, but the water can be rougher and visibility less reliable from November through March.
What to Expect When You Book
Trips depart from our base on Dockyard Road, Trincomalee. Most dive sites are 15–40 minutes by boat. We run small groups — usually no more than six divers per guide — so you actually get attention in the water, not just during the briefing.
Equipment is all included. We'll size you for a wetsuit, fins, and mask before departure. If you prefer to bring your own kit, that's fine too.
After each dive, there's surface interval time on the boat with snacks and water before the second dive. We're usually back at the jetty by midday.

“As a couple, we spent the last two days diving with this dive school. We both have our Open Water certifications, but hadn't been underwater for years. Nevertheless, we felt incredibly well-prepared and supported. The dives were fantastic, and everyone on the team was very friendly. I would recommend it to all my friends!”

“I did my first dive here and it was PERFECT. Clear instructions (video + explanations), a beach entry for basic safety procedures, and a safe 45-minute dive in a beautiful location! The instructor was friendly and playful, and there were only two of us on the dive! Plus, we were filmed and they sent us the files directly!”

“It was a fantastic experience. We arrived at 6 a.m. and it started right away. They explained everything to us and really did their best to ensure we saw the dolphins. He even brought us close to the dolphins. It was simply perfect. Since we still had time, we were even able to check out a few other spots. I recommend it to everyone, and for the price, it was definitely worth it.”
